Demonstration Reach

Demonstration Reaches for Native Fish Demonstration  Reaches are large scale river reaches established for the purpose of demonstrating to the community the cumulative benefits of applying a number of interventions (e.g. provision of fish passage, resnagging, alien species management)  for rehabilitation of native fish habitat and populations.

Katarapko and Eckert Creeks have been identified as a priority floodplain area and is one of the first demonstration reaches to be trialled in Australia.

Native Fish Strategy The term Demonstration Reach was coined by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority in the Native Fish Strategy.

The Native Fish Strategy aims to rehabilitate aquatic habitats and ecological processes and restore healthy native fish communities in the Murray-Darling Basin. Estimates show the native fish populations today are at 10%  of pre-European levels. With this strategy, it is aimed to return native fish populations to 60% of pre-European levels in the next 50 years.
